How to watermark so it survives cropping, screenshots and removal tools
Most watermarks are removed in under a minute, and it's almost always the same mistake: a small logo in a corner, on a plain background, at low opacity.
Here's what actually holds up. This is tool-agnostic — the principles work wherever you watermark.
Start with the honest bit
No visible watermark is unremovable. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
Modern inpainting reconstructs what's behind a mark convincingly, and it's free and it's on phones. A determined person will get your watermark off any image you publish.
So the goal isn't prevention. It's cost. You want removal to take long enough, and damage the image enough, that the casual reposter doesn't bother — and that's most of them. Everything below is about raising that cost.
Rule 1: the corner is the worst place
The bottom-right corner is the default, and it's the first thing anyone crops.
It's also usually sky, wall, sand or blurred background — a smooth, low-detail region, which is exactly where inpainting works best. You've placed your mark in the one part of the frame a removal tool finds easiest.
Better: across the subject, or across the boundary between subject and background. A mark that crosses a face, a product edge, or a busy region of detail cannot be removed without visibly damaging the thing the image is for.
It feels wrong aesthetically. That's the trade: a watermark that doesn't interfere with the image also doesn't interfere with theft.
Rule 2: tiling beats placement
If a single mark can be cropped out, put several across the frame.
Tiled watermarks — repeated horizontally, vertically, or both, usually at an angle — survive cropping by construction. Crop out one instance and three remain. There's no "outside the watermark" region to keep.
They're also much harder to remove automatically. Inpainting a corner logo means reconstructing one small area. Inpainting forty overlapping diagonal marks means reconstructing most of the image, and the result won't be worth having.
Angle them. Diagonal tiling at 30–45° crosses more distinct regions than horizontal, and doesn't align with any natural edge in the photograph.
Use it for proofs, not portfolios. Tiling is aggressive and it hurts the picture. It's right for client proofs, unpaid previews and anything you expect to be lifted. For a portfolio piece meant to impress, it's the wrong tool.
Rule 3: opacity is a curve, not a slider
Too transparent and it's gone with a levels adjustment. Too opaque and it ruins the image and looks amateurish.
Roughly:
- 10–20% — decorative. Removable by anyone. Fine for attribution on work you don't mind being copied.
- 30–50% — the useful band for most published work. Clearly present, doesn't destroy the image, genuinely irritating to remove cleanly.
- 60%+ — proofs and previews. You're deliberately degrading the image.
The catch: a low-opacity mark over a flat area is nearly free to remove, while the same opacity over busy detail is much harder. Opacity and placement aren't independent settings — decide them together.
Rule 4: use the image's own structure
This is the technique most people never try, and it's the one that holds up best.
An embossed or 3D watermark uses the photograph itself as a depth map — the mark is chiselled or raised into the image rather than laid over it. Because it derives from the underlying pixels, there's no flat overlay to subtract. Removal tools trained on "find the overlay, replace with plausible background" have much less to work with.
It also looks considerably better than a semi-transparent logo. Subtle, professional, and harder to shift.

Rule 5: size it as a percentage, not in pixels
A watermark set at 300 pixels is discreet on a 6,000px landscape and covers half the frame on a 900px portrait.
Set it as a percentage of the output — 1% to 100% — so it scales with the image. Across a mixed batch, this is the difference between consistent results and going back through by hand.
Rule 6: screenshots don't care about your metadata
A screenshot is a fresh file. No EXIF, no IPTC, no XMP, no provenance. Everything embedded is gone.
The only thing that survives a screenshot is what's visible in the pixels. Which is the argument for a visible mark, and specifically for one placed where a cropped screenshot will still contain it — not out at the edges.
Practically: keep your mark within the central 60–70% of the frame, or tile it. Anything in the outer margin is one screenshot away from gone.
Rule 7: mark the file as well as the picture
The visible watermark is for humans. Underneath it, your file should carry:

That's what stock agencies, CMSs, image search and AI opt-out mechanisms read.
And check your watermarking tool isn't deleting it. Many decode, draw and re-encode, which throws all of that away. You end up with the visible half of your copyright claim and none of the machine-readable half — worse than doing nothing, because it feels protected. Rule 8: publish smaller
The most effective protection on this page has nothing to do with watermarks.
A 1,600px web export is worth much less to anyone stealing it than a 45-megapixel original. It can't be printed large, it can't be resold as stock, and it's a weaker training sample.
Export for the medium. Keep the original.
Rule 9: keep the clean original
Whatever you do, keep the unwatermarked, full-resolution file with its capture metadata intact.
It's your best evidence in a dispute — you can produce the original, they can't. And watermarking is irreversible, so if you overwrite it, it's simply gone.

And the limits, again
Everything here raises the cost of theft. None of it prevents theft, and none of it stops your images being scraped for AI training — a visible watermark does nothing there, and we've written about that separately.
What good watermarking gives you: attribution when your work travels, friction against casual copying, and a much stronger position if you ever have to argue about it.
That's worth having. It just isn't a lock.
